Flying Leathernecks was established on November 10, 2007 by Dave Roof in Marietta, Georgia. Prior to the Flying Leathernecks name being adopted, we were known as Orion Scale Models, which was created in June of 2000 in Fort Worth, TX. Before Orion Scale Models, Dave got his start in the hobby business in 1992 when he was employed by Model Technologies / Teknics in Chino, CA. creating resin masters and artwork. Over the next several years, he worked with a number of aftermarket companies providing technical input and reference material.
Dave is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from June of 1988 until retirement in March of 2010. Duty locations included MCAS El Toro, CA. : MCAS Iwakuni, Japan : Sheik Isa, Bahrain in support of Operation Desert Storm : MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. : MCAS Miramar, CA. : NAS/JRB Fort Worth, TX. : Prior Service Recruiting Station Pittsburgh, PA. : NAS Atlanta, GA. : Bagram, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom : MCAS Cherry Point, NC. : MCB Camp LeJeune, NC.
FLSC was created to specifically focus on preserving the Aviation History of the US Marine Corps in scale model form.
For 8 years, Scale to the Corps has been providing built scale models as Retirement, Change of Command, Going Away, and Marine Corps Ball Guest's of Honor gifts to multiple Squadrons and Commands. In addition to these, build requests for current active duty Marines are also accepted. All builds are done at no cost to the Squadron, Command, or individual Marine. As a Retired Marine myself, this is my personal way of giving back to the Corps and taking care of fellow Marines. To request a gift build, simply email or text using the contact information at the top of the site.
To follow along with requested builds, or for more information, please visit my page on Facebook : Scale to the Corps
